Normally when you send your child back to school they are somewhere between K-12 grade, or possibly a college student. This year I am sending my daughter “back to school” but the difference this year is that she is the new teacher. I am so happy for her. Last year she filled in for teachers who were on maternity leave working twelve week “mini contracts” but this year she has her own classroom for the first time. She is eager to put all of her years as a student into practice educating young minds.
On Monday morning her classroom will be filled with sixteen fresh faced kindergartners eager to learn, nervous and excited about going to elementary school for the first time…if only they knew this was a first for their teacher as well.
I’ve been to her classroom twice so far helping her set up the room. I hung the alphabet letters, hung the calendar, helped arrange the desks and the furniture, unpacked boxes and put away plenty of learning materials. It seemed like a lot of work, yet it barely scratched the surface. There is a lot of work to be done before the students even arrive!
I wonder if she will let me take her picture Monday morning just before she heads out the door with her first day outfit on, lunch box and supplies in hand…I’m thinking not.
